Can a Healthy Microbiome Support Our Mental Well-Being?

Everyone has experienced moments like these: Before an important meeting, your stomach suddenly tightens. After a sleepless night, your digestion often seems out of balance. And sometimes, your gut feeling tells you what is right long before your rational mind reaches a decision.

Today, it is no longer just a hypothesis that the gut and the brain are far more closely connected than previously believed. The so-called gut–brain axis has become one of the most exciting fields of research in the areas of the microbiome, nutrition, and health.

And this connection extends far beyond digestion. Our gut bacteria are in constant communication with the brain, influence the immune system, and produce metabolic compounds that can affect the entire body. This is where a relatively young field of research comes into play: psychobiotics.

But what exactly does this term mean? Can specific gut bacteria really influence our mental well-being? And what role does nutrition play in this process?

Psychobiotics – More Than Just Another Health Trend

The term psychobiotics was first introduced in 2013 by Irish researchers Ted Dinan and John Cryan. It refers to specific live microorganisms that may exert beneficial effects on psychological processes through the gut–brain axis.

Today, the term is sometimes used more broadly to include probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics—substances and preparations that promote health in general.

The underlying idea is fascinating: gut bacteria may not only influence digestion, but also affect how the body responds to stress, regulates inflammatory processes, and processes signals exchanged between the gut and the brain.

This does not mean that taking a specific probiotic or synbiotic will suddenly eliminate low mood or emotional distress. Instead, current research is exploring whether a healthy gut microbiome provides an important foundation for both physical and mental balance.

The Gut–Brain Axis: The Direct Communication Path Between the Gut and the Brain

Our gut is home to trillions of microorganisms that collectively make up the gut microbiome. This microbial community is far more than a participant in digestion. It produces numerous metabolites, influences the immune system, and communicates with the brain through several interconnected pathways.

One important group of these metabolites is the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including butyrate, acetate, and propionate. They are produced when gut bacteria ferment dietary fibre. The immune system also plays a crucial role. An impaired intestinal barrier and chronic low-grade inflammation are increasingly being linked to a wide range of diseases, including mental health disorders.

A frequently quoted statement is that "90% of the body's serotonin is produced in the gut." While this is essentially true, the serotonin produced in the gut does not simply travel to the brain. Can Gut Bacteria Influence Our Mood?

This is precisely the question researchers are currently trying to answer.

Several recent meta-analyses suggest that certain probiotics may lead to small to moderate improvements in depressive symptoms. Particularly promising results have been observed in individuals with existing depression when probiotics were used as an adjunct to conventional treatment (Moshfeghinia et al., 2025; Zhang et al., 2025).

There is also emerging evidence that probiotics may have beneficial effects on anxiety, stress, and sleep quality. At the same time, however, the findings are not entirely consistent across studies. Differences exist in the bacterial strains used, the dosage, the duration of supplementation, and the populations studied (Zhang et al., 2025; Śliwka et al., 2025).

These differences make the field both exciting and complex.

Psychobiotics should therefore not be viewed as a "new antidepressant from the gut." Instead, they may represent one component of a holistic approach that combines nutrition, physical activity, healthy sleep, stress management, and appropriate medical care.

Not Every Probiotic Is Automatically a Psychobiotic

 

An important point that is often overlooked is that the effects of probiotics are strain-specific.
This means that not every bacterium belonging to a particular species or genus has the same properties. One strain of Lactobacillus may demonstrate promising effects in a study, while another strain from the same genus may produce entirely different outcomes.

To date, bacteria from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium have been investigated most extensively. They are among the best-researched probiotic microorganisms and play an important role in maintaining a diverse and resilient gut microbiome (Moshfeghinia et al., 2025).

The current evidence therefore does not suggest that all probiotics make people happier. Rather, it indicates that specific microorganisms may influence biological processes associated with mental health through various mechanisms.

Psychobiotics from the Kitchen: How Our Diet Supports the Microbiome

Our diet plays a major role in determining which microorganisms thrive in our gut.

Fermented foods such as plain yogurt with live cultures, kefir, kimchi, miso, tempeh, and sauerkraut contain live microorganisms and may contribute to a more diverse gut microbiome.

Equally important, however, is providing food for the gut bacteria themselves. Dietary fibre from vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds serves as nourishment for many beneficial microorganisms. During fermentation, these bacteria produce valuable metabolites such as butyrate.

The key message is therefore simple:

A healthy microbiome is not built by a single "superfood"—it thrives on diversity.

A varied, fibre-rich diet provides the most important foundation for a healthy gut microbiome. Nevertheless, there are situations in which targeted nutritional support may be beneficial—for example, following antibiotic treatment, during digestive complaints, or in periods of high physical or psychological stress.
